Take Tupac Shakur, mix in some Malxolm X, and throw in a little Redman for balance and you get Lyrical Militant - a Canadian Hip-Hop artist and producer from Winnipeg, Manitoba. The often politically charged producer, emcee and songwriter balances the socially conscious with the mainstream - bringing together modern soul and jazz vibes and lightly fusing them with South Asian style. His current 15-track release, “Download this Mixtape,” is available for free on his website www.LyricalMilitant.com.
Militant has shared the stage with many different acts including opening up for Jurassic 5 emcee Akil the MC in June 2009 and performing with soul singer Flo, and rap crew Swigfu. He has also performed alongside Abstract Artform across central Canada and was a regular performer at VIBE Nightclub in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Militant has also been featured on ABC-affiliated, nationally syndicated radio and has received glowing reviews from the FameGames Radio Show and publications like Uptown Magazine. Originally from Thompson, Manitoba, Militant was once an on-air host for CHTM Radio and has since been featured on numerous online radio shows and podcasts.
He was exposed to a wide variety of music growing up, and was trained at a young age in classical percussion and jazz drumming. Militant quickly picked up keyboard skills and wrote his first song at the age of 11. He became a DJ at 17 and a producer at 19. After flipping beats to several underground artists in Manitoba and Ontario, Militant decided it was time to take the mic. He released his first solo EP/mixtape in 2008, and his debut Album (LP) will be released in early 2010.
